Maca is a root that grows at extreme elevations high in the Andean
Mountains of Peru. It looks like a little turnip or radish and is a
traditional staple food in Peru. Its Latin name is Lepidium Peruvianum
Chacon. It's also known as Peruvian ginseng, or Amazonian ginseng, but
isn't related to ginseng at all. This large family of flowering plants is
widely studied for their medicinal properties and includes familiar,
similarly nutritious vegetables like broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage,
cauliflower, and kale.
Maca is known to contain various nutrients, including amino acids and
minerals. Maca also contains sterols and fatty acids, such as linolenic,
palmitic, and oleic acid.
Due to the number of steroidal glycosides present in Maca root, it is
gaining popularity among weight lifters and bodybuilders as a natural
alternative to anabolic steroids.*
Maca has been traditionally employed, among other things, to improve
sexuality and fertility. Recent scientific studies have demonstrated that
Maca supports hormonal balance and both male and female reproductive
health.*
Maca's popularity has grown tremendously to grow as people discover that
the plant does in fact seem to increase libido, sexual function, and
overall energy. The amount of land in Peru dedicated to Maca cultivation is
increasing every year as demand for the herb rises, and a number of medical
researchers have turned much of their attention to validating the
properties of this root.*
In Peru, this herb has been used as an aphrodisiac for both men and women,
to increase energy, vitality, stamina, and endurance in athletes, promote
mental clarity, for fertility and to increase male seminal fluid volume,
sperm count and sperm motility, for treating male impotence and erectile
dysfunction, and for female menstrual irregularities and hormone
imbalances, including menopause and perimenopause.*
How Maca has been shown to help with Menopause:
Maca works directly to the menopausal root problem, it does not represent
any risk for the body, it is not toxic, and is considered an adaptive plant.
It may raise the non-specific resistance to disease, is capable of
normalizing functions in the body even in disease states, it is non-toxic
and harmless to any organ of the body, and is safe for ingestion for long
periods as a nutritive (for prevention).*
Maca is used in Peru to alleviate Post Menopausal Symptoms like hot
flashes, low libido, depression, and problems with concentration and mood
swings. It works entirely different than Black Cohosh, Dong Quai, or
Licorice Root.*
The other state involving menopause is post-menopause. For these women, the
typical symptoms of menopause have globally disappeared, but the aging
process of the body continues. MACA may help to slow and keep youthful skin
and preventing vaginal dryness. It also may benefit bone health due to its
supportive mineral content. It is also used in Peru to treat and prevent
osteoporosis.*
Women with menstrual irregularities who have used Maca have experienced
greater consistency, while women with hot flashes, mood swings, and most
associated premenopausal and menopause symptoms have diminished
dramatically.*
Menopause is a natural progression in a woman's life - it is the cessation
of menses generally accompanied by symptoms. This transition is unique for
every woman yet there are ways to prevent and diminish the symptoms that
typically accompany menopause.*
MACA - has been shown to increase libido and sexual function in both men
and women helps decrease menopause symptoms, increase energy and stamina in
athletes, promote mental clarity.*
