Melatonin Shows Protection Against Breast Cancer Studies Find

New research shows that Melatonin can slow or stop the growth and spread of breast cancer! Estrogen affects about 70% of breast cancer tumors. Melatonin has a natural anti-estrogen effect.

The most common drug used to combat breast cancer is Tamoxifen. This drug blocks estrogen receptor sites, which slows the growth and reproduction of many breast cancer cells. In a study where they added Melatonin to Tamoxifen, it made the drug 100 times more potent. This means that by adding Melatonin to Tamoxifen it might be possible to use less of the drug which reduces not only the harmful effects of the drug but the cost.

When tested the addition of Melatonin with a variety of chemotherapy drugs, using 20 mg of Melatonin daily in addition to the chemotherapy, resulted in a higher survival rate after one year and reduced the toxicity of drugs.

Melatonin is equally effective when used with radiation therapy. Research shows that exposure to Melatonin before radiation therapy increased the effectiveness of this treatment by decreasing cell creation.
