Description Supplement Facts

Zinc is an essential mineral that plays an important role in many enzymatic functions.* Found primarily in the kidneys, liver, pancreas, and brain, Zinc also helps support healthy immune system functions and is an important component of bodily antioxidant systems.*

Your need for zinc supplementation beyond that in a multi-vitamin-mineral is determined by your diet, how many of the following deficiency symptoms you have, & whether you have tested low on any measures of zinc.*

Zinc types compared:

Chelated zinc
is a type of zinc supplement. It contains zinc that's been attached to a chelating agent. Chelating agents are chemical compounds that bind with metal ions (such as zinc) to create a stable, water-soluble product that can be easily absorbed by the body. Helps your immune system defend against viruses and bacteria. supports your body's protein production. Helps your body make DNA (the genetic material in all cells) supports your sense of smell and taste.

Zinc Picolinate
is zinc that is bound to the organic acid picolinic acid, which is naturally made in the body from the amino acid L-Tryptophan. Often used to treat acne.

Zinc gluconate
is a nutritional supplement containing the zinc salt form of gluconic acid for the purpose of providing zinc. Often used in cold remedies.

OptiZinc (Zinc Monomethionine) is effective in promoting immune health, antioxidant activity, cognitive function, and skin health. This form combines zinc with methionine, an amino acid that enhances absorption and retention in the body, making it highly bioavailable. It is considered to be more stable and effective at maintaining zinc levels over a longer period, making it ideal for those seeking consistent zinc benefits.

  • Bone structure support.*
  • May kill some virus on contact.*
  • Participates in antioxidant enzyme systems in your eyes, helping to prevent & slow the progression of macular degeneration.*
  • Together with vitamin B6 can reduce the size of the prostate by regulating the enzyme that converts testosterone to the harmful prostate stimulating DHT (dihydrotestosterone)*
  • Participates in carbohydrate metabolism.*

NIH – National Institute of Health : Zinc for the treatment of the common cold: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials: Zinc, which can inhibit rhinovirus replication and has activity against other respiratory viruses such as respiratory syncytial virus, is a potential treatment for the common cold. The exact mechanism of zinc’s activity on viruses remains uncertain. Zinc may also reduce the severity of cold symptoms by acting as an astringent on the trigeminal nerve.

A recent meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials concluded that zinc was effective at reducing the duration and severity of common cold symptoms. Read Meta-Analysis Randomized Controlled Trials here

Science Direct States
: Zinc and immune function: the biological basis of altered resistance to infection . Zinc is known to play a central role in the immune system, and zinc-deficient persons experience increased susceptibility to a variety of pathogens. The immunologic mechanisms whereby zinc modulates increased susceptibility to infection have been studied for several decades. It is clear that zinc affects multiple aspects of the immune system, from the barrier of the skin to gene regulation within lymphocytes. Zinc is crucial for normal development and function of cells mediating nonspecific immunity such as neutrophils and natural killer cells. Zinc deficiency also affects development of acquired immunity by preventing both the outgrowth and certain functions of T lymphocytes such as activation, Th1 cytokine production, and B lymphocyte help. Likewise, B lymphocyte development and antibody production, particularly immunoglobulin G, is compro-mised. The macrophage, a pivotal cell in many immunologic functions, is adversely affected by zinc deficiency, which can dysregulate intracellular killing, cytokine production, and phagocytosis. The effects of zinc on these key immunologic mediators is rooted in the myriad roles for zinc in basic cellular functions such as DNA replication, RNA transcription, cell division, and cell activation. Apoptosis is potentiated by zinc defi-ciency. Zinc also functions as an antioxidant and can stabilize membranes. This review explores these aspects of zinc biology of the immune system and attempts to provide a biological basis for the altered host resistance to infections observed during zinc deficiency and supplementation.
