Vitamin D - Lower Blood Glucose in Women

High glucose levels are associated with an increased risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.

Recent studies have shown a clear relationship between Vitamin D and glycemic control. This suggests that Vitamin D increases insulin sensitivity and improves pancreatic function. In this study they used a cross-sectional group involving 680 Brazilian women aged 35 to 74 years, the goal was to evaluate the possible association between vitamin D deficiency and increased glycemia.

Of the women interviewed, 24 reported using vitamin D supplements. Vitamin D supplementation was found to be negatively associated with high glucose levels. Habitual exposure to the sun also provided the same association, demonstrating that vitamin D deficiencies are associated with high blood glucose levels.

In other studies by performing glucose tolerance tests, it was determined that Vitamin D in the brain could improve glucose tolerance. A glucose clamp was utilized to maintain blood glucose at a steady rate. With Vitamin D3 treatment in the brain, the test animals needed more glucose. This means the insulin was working better in these animals.
