SAM-e - Helps Depression and Moods
SAM-e
stands for S-adenosyl methionine, a naturally occurring molecule that is
widely used in Europe for depression. It is found throughout the body. The
liver, adrenal glands, and brain have high concentrations of SAM-e.
Research offers hope to patients who haven’t been helped by traditional
antidepressant treatment. Studies suggest that for more than half of
depressed patients, antidepressants alone don’t eliminate symptoms. That is
why taking
SAM-e
in addition to antidepressants show a marked improvement. SAM-e should not
be taken in combination with a prescription antidepressant without the
monitoring of a
health
professional. Other studies have shown that using SAM-e alone can benefit
many patients.
SAM-e
is an important methyl donor, an essential step in the synthesis of several
neurotransmitters from amino acids in the
diet
. The antidepressant effects of SAM-e are probably related to multiple
mechanisms of action including increased brain levels of serotonin,
dopamine
, and norepinephrine.
The standard maintenance regimen of oral SAM-e for depressed mood is
between 800 and 1600 mg per day in two to four divided doses. A common
dosing strategy is to start SAM-e at a dose of 200 mg twice daily, and
gradually increase to 400 mg twice daily, monitoring for side effects and
therapeutic response. Absorption is improved when SAM-e is taken on an
empty stomach (i.e., before meals).
