BILBERRY
Liquid Herbal Extract
Bilberry, a European relative of the American blueberry, is most widely used to
treat eye or ocular disorders. It is indicated for individuals with
degenerative retinal conditions, such as macular degeneration, diabetic
retinopathy, glaucoma, and cataracts. Bilberry protects against the
breakdown of rhodopsin, a light-sensitive pigment located in the rod cells
of the retina, and is able to regenerate rhodopsin. It also facilitates the
delivery of oxygen and blood to the eyes and acts as an antioxidant.
Studies show that bilberry improves nighttime visual acuity, quickens
adjustment to darkness, and speeds restoration of visual acuity after
exposure to glare.
Bilberry
contains potent antioxidants called anthocyanidins, which contribute to its
positive effects on the eyes’ circulatory system. Bilberry’s anthocyanidins
fight inflammation, strengthen collagen connective tissue and promote
collagen synthesis. They decrease capillary fragility and permeability and
help microcirculatory disorders, including varicose veins, atherosclerosis, and venous insufficiency. Bilberry promotes normal circulation by increasing
the flexibility of capillary walls and the ability of blood cells to
squeeze through narrow capillaries. It inhibits blood clot formation,
reduces the risk of stroke, increases the strength of the heartbeat, and
inhibits the oxidation of LDL cholesterol.
