What is Oxidation & why should we worry about Anti-Oxidation?
An easy-to-understand example of oxidation is to imagine rust attacking metal. When the rust eats away at the metal, the metal starts to weaken and decay until it can no longer work. This is what happens to our body when free radicals attack it. Organs, cells, and other parts of the body can be weakened by oxidation. This leads to diseases such as cancer, skin and heart diseases, senile dementia, and osteoarthritis.
The ORAC score test was developed by Dr. Guohua Cao, a chemist, and physician. The ORAC score covers all the antioxidants in foods. Antioxidants cannot easily be measured separately, but the ORAC score test can identify which nutrients are the important antioxidants. Combinations of nutrients found in foods may have greater protective benefits than each nutrient on its own. Many people obtain a number of their daily nutrients from supplements in pill or powder form, but in order to receive the best form of nutrients, it is essential to receive them from plant-based food supplements. There are certain types of plants that have a better antioxidant level than others, and the ORAC score can measure these.
Different types of fruit and vegetables have different ORAC scores. The recommended "5-a-day" fruit and vegetable servings will give you an ORAC score of 1,750 units. You could pick seven fruits with a low ORAC level and achieve only 1,300 ORAC units, or you could pick seven with high values and receive around 6,000 ORAC units or more. A large handful of blueberries would give you an ORAC score of around 6,000.
Studies have shown that eating foods with a high ORAC score will raise the antioxidant levels in the blood by around 10 to 25%. The ORAC figure suggested by experts is around 5,000 units per day to have a significant effect on plasma and tissue antioxidant levels. Eating eight to ten servings of brightly colored fruits and vegetables or dark greens will help achieve this level. More and more foods and supplements are beginning to state the ORAC score on their labels, and this should make it easier to find foods you like that are also good for you.
Here is what the Phyto Red's do in breakdown form:
Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid ) is a very important vitamin. It helps to promote healthy capillaries, gums, teeth; aid iron absorption; heal wounds, burns, and broken bones; increase calcium absorption; form collagen in connective tissues; aid in adrenal gland function; reduce free-radical production, etc.
D-alpha tocopherol is the most absorbable form of Vitamin E. It aids in promoting normal growth and development, normal red-blood-cell formation, and vitamin C recycling. Vitamin E acts as an anti-blood-clotting agent and antioxidant to enable the body to better deal with cancer, heart disease, free radicals in the body. It also improves immunity, especially in Vitamin E deficient people.
Zinc is a mineral that functions in antioxidant reactions, maintains the normal taste and sense of smell, promotes normal growth and development, aids wound healing, helps synthesize DNA and RNA, promotes cell division, repair, and growth. It also boosts immunity in zinc-deficient people.

Multivitamins also effectively fill in nutrient gaps that we all have from today’s lifestyle and our diets. This is extremely important to help support overall health and wellness.*
Fact: It is definitely not surprising that most (90% or more) of Americans do not meet their recommended daily intake of vitamins due to their diets, but here is the really surprising part, even the individuals who eat their suggested/recommended daily servings of fruits and vegetables still do not receive their proper daily intake of vitamins and minerals that are needed for our bodies to operate efficiently. How is this? Our modern processing, mass production, and the way we cook or our food gets cooked for us have been found to be far less nutritious than in years past. To put this into perspective, it takes several more cups of fruits and vegetables today to equal one cup of that same fruit or veggie from just 50 years ago.* See All 30 of LifeSource Vitamins other Multivitamins: Click Here
Fact: Why do we need Multivitamins? There are numerous carefully controlled health and food studies have shown that by the time the food makes it to our tables we have lost sometimes as much as 50% of the nutrients of the particular foods we are eating. yes, 50%! *
Why Take Vitamins? Do We Really Need to? This is the single most asked question we get daily.
Answer: From Bruce Brightman, Founder of LifeSource Vitamins: The answer is YES! Without a doubt. Let me ask you a question. How is it that every form of cancer known worldwide is higher than ever in the United States, yet we have more prescription medications than ever, which are a whole other story? Our food is the main reason. Here are some reasons why. Our soils have been farmed so much the soil has lost the majority of the nutritional value that is needed for our vegetables to be beneficial for us. Lastly, they add pesticides and other chemicals, add all of this together, and then we really have problems. So the same tomato we are eating today is not nearly as nutritious as that same tomato from 10 years ago. Now we move onto our beef and pork. They are filling our livestock full of growth hormones to help them grow bigger, faster. Faster to market, so to speak. Then you add the feed that they are feeding our livestock is not nearly as nutritious due to our soils being depleted, so they are not as healthy. They are minimizing the growth time for these animals drastically, it is not healthy for them and it surely is not healthy for humans.* With our poultry, this is really scary; they have cut in half the growth time of these animals with chemicals. This is really a huge issue for the US. Another huge concern is their living conditions being so sub-standard. Not healthy for the poultry, and again, not healthy for us to consume. Lastly our fish. We can sum this up with one word; pollution. Our waters are terribly polluted. We have unbelievably high amounts of mercury, which are found in numerous fish that we eat every day. Our pollution governmental regulations in the US are getting better, but not practiced around the world. This is a worldwide problem, not just in the US. Now we see that we have fish farms, they seem to be great right, well maybe not. They have thousands of fish in small areas in numerous cases. Too many fish in a small confined area is not healthy. Also, with these farm-raised fish, they are not finding Omega 3's in these fish, which is perplexing. Again, this emphasizes the importance of an Omega 3 supplement.*
All the above being said this is exactly why you need to consider certain supplements. The multivitamin would be the most important supplement. But not just any supplements. They cannot be synthetic, which is what you will find at mass retailers. When it costs more to produce a simple gumball than it does for your vitamin for the day from these mass retailers, then there may be a problem. How do they do this; inexpensive and non-effective ingredients. They also use heat processing, which heat kills most nutrients and makes them virtually ineffective. This is where the bad publicity comes from with regard to supplements and how they go right through you. Whole food multivitamins are the only way for them to reach your bloodstream, which is essentially is how they become effective.*
By now you are probably wondering what is left to eat? Well, there are still some great choices out there. There is a plethora of organic stores out there that have great beef, poultry, pork, and fish. You pay a little more, but your health is certainly worth it.
JAMA Recommends a Multivitamin
(JAMA stands for the Journal of American Medical Association, the foremost authority on Supplements).
The American Medical Association is advising all adults to take at least one multi-vitamin per day-a reversal of their long-standing anti-vitamin policy.
According to Drs. Robert Fletcher and Kathleen Fairfield of Harvard University, scientists' understanding of the benefits of vitamins has rapidly advanced. It now appears that people who get enough vitamins may have a lower risk of some common chronic illnesses like cancer, heart disease, and osteoporosis.
JAMA's last comprehensive review of vitamins was about 20 years ago. It concluded that people of normal health did not need to take a multivitamin. JAMA advised that people can get all the necessary nutrients from their diet. Only pregnant women and chronically sick people may need to supplement their diets with certain vitamins.
At that time, the knowledge about vitamins was just beginning to expand. The value of folic acid in preventing some birth defects and heart disease was not yet known. Researchers hope that JAMA's endorsement will encourage more people to take daily multivitamins.
Health experts are increasingly worried that many American adults are not consuming enough vitamins in their diet. Almost 80 percent of Americans do not eat the recommended five servings of fruits and vegetables a day to provide essential nutrients.
"It's nice to see this change in philosophy that's saying we can make public-health recommendations based on this really compelling set of data," said Dr. Jeffrey Blumberg, chief of antioxidant research at Tuft's University's Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging.
Blumberg said the JAMA recommendations underscore a concern among nutrition experts that recommended daily allowances for many vitamins are too low. RDAs were originally established to prevent symptoms of vitamin deficiency disorders. But the evidence is growing that higher levels of many vitamins are necessary for optimum health.
Dr. Robert Fletcher agrees. "All of us grew up believing that if we ate a reasonable diet, that would take care of our vitamin needs. But the new evidence, much of it in the last couple of years, is that vitamins also prevent the usual diseases we deal with every day-heart disease, cancer, osteoporosis and birth defects."
Because foods contain thousands of vitamin-like compounds that may be important for good health, vitamin supplements should not be a substitute for a wholesome diet. Also searched: Adult Multi Chewable - Adult Multivitamin Chewable - Adult Multi-Vitamin Chewable
