GREEN TEA
Liquid Herbal Extract
Every day our bodies are exposed to harmful free radicals. Free radicals
are unstable molecules created when we are exposed to pollution, cigarette
smoke, stress, and other toxins. These byproducts of oxygen metabolism
cause major damage to the cells in our bodies. The destruction of these
cells is listed among the causes of many degenerative diseases, especially
those related to aging. Antioxidants fight free radicals. The powerful
antioxidants in Green Tea may help fight the free radicals that contribute
to skin, lung, and stomach cancer as well as contribute to lowered blood
pressure and LDL cholesterol.
Antioxidants are free radicals’ mortal enemy. Antioxidants bind with free
radicals to neutralize their harmful effect. One of the most powerful
sources of antioxidants is Green Tea. Popular in Japan and China for
thousands of years, Green Tea is rich in polyphenols and one in particular
called a catechin. Catechins are 40 to 200 times more effective in seeking
out and destroying free radicals than Vitamin A, C, and E. These include
four major polyphenols including epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG),
epicatechin gallate (ECG, and epigallocatechin (EC). Of these compounds, EGCG is
the most abundant in Green Tea and has generated the most interest.
Peer-reviewed scientific research has consistently shown that EGCG is a
potent antioxidant, deactivating health-damaging free radicals. While these
highly reactive and unstable compounds are generated in normal metabolic
processes, they increase in number when we are exposed to environmental
toxins, cigarette smoke, regular alcohol use, or excessive sunlight. Even
the emotional stress associated with our hectic, fast paced lives has been
shown to disrupt normal physiological processes and tip the balance in
favor of free radicals. Perhaps the most significant determinant of free
radical activity is the aging process itself, which plays an important role
in chronic disease.
By virtue of its antioxidant effects, EGCG has been shown to exert a number
of beneficial activities, such a reducing inflammation (inhibiting
interleukin-1 beta-induced activity and expression of cyclooxygenase-2 and
nitric oxide synthase-2 in chondrocytes), and normalizing cell and tissue
function (by inducing apoptosis, inhibiting angiogenesis, and
down-regulating urokinase plasminogen activator). In promoting
cardiovascular health EGCG has been shown to inhibit free radical activity
in the arteries (reducing oxidized low-density lipoprotein and soluble
vascular cell adhesion molecule-1), and thus assists in coronary
circulation. Other studies have shown that ECGC has a benefit in
normalizing blood glucose and protecting the pancreas from oxidative
damage, as well as in boosting metabolism and burning fat. Green Tea
catechins and ECGC in particular have also been shown to naturally support
detoxification and the elimination of toxic substances from the body while
protecting the liver.
Although it is clear that Green Tea has a lot to offer, it is important to
understand that the amount of ECGC in a typical cup of green tea is very
limited and that for the complete health-preventative effects researchers
recommend up to 10 cups of Green Tea a day. For most people, 10 cups of
Green Tea daily is unreasonable. Further, many companies use paper that has
been bleached with cancer-causing compounds called dioxins to make their
tea bags, and thus consuming the recommended 10 cups of tea a day puts the
consumer at risk. The liquid concentrate avoids all this.
- Green Tea helps boost immune function. It is thought to stimulate immune
cells, which fight infections by building lymphatic tissue and producing
antibodies.
- Green Tea is growing as a weight loss supplement as a thermogenic option. It
may help some to eat less as well as increase their metabolism.
Green Tea comes from the leaves of the camellia sinensis. This plant also
produces Oolong and Black tea. The tea leaves are processed differently to
achieve their unique characteristics. Of the three, Green Tea contains the
highest levels of polyphenols, the antioxidant substance that is believed
to be beneficial in fighting free radicals.
100% TESTING OF INGREDIENTS AND PRODUCTS
- FTIR (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy) – helps identify chemicals or compounds.
- GC (gas chromatography) – measures chemical spectrum and potency, and is often used for testing essential oils.
- HP-TLC (high-performance thin-layer chromatography) – identifies the genus and species of a plant.
- HPLC (High-Pressure Liquid Chromatography) – isolates chemical markers to measure the potency of a plant compound, vitamin, or mineral.
- ICP-MS (inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry) – quantifies the amount of heavy metal in a raw material or product.
- Microscopy – helps identify the genus and species of whole botanicals by looking at cell structure.
- Macroscopy –identifies the genus and species of a whole plant.
- Microbiological testing – shows the count of aerobic bacteria, yeast, mold, e-coli, staph, and salmonella in raw and finished goods.
- Organoleptic – uses taste, color, and smell as quality markers in raw materials and finished goods.
- Titration – measures vitamin or mineral potency.
- UV-VIS (ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy) – measures the amount of a specific compound in a plant.
