Alpha Lipoic Acid Slows Aging
LifeSource Vitamins
Alpha Lipoic acid may be one of the keys to a longer, healthier life. A new
study from the Linus Pauling Institute (LPI) at Oregon State University
found that the powerful antioxidant appears to slow aging, improve blood
flow, and improve immune function by boosting the natural defenses of the
body to levels found in youth.
"In particular, it appears to restore levels of glutathione, a protective
antioxidant and detoxification compound, to those of a young animal," said
Tory Hagel, a researcher at LPI and an associate professor of biochemistry
and biophysics at OSU. "It also acts as a strong anti-inflammatory agent,
which is relevant to many degenerative diseases."
American is facing an aging epidemic, says Hagel. "In a short time more
than 70 million Americans will be over 65. It will be an unprecedented
number of elderly people." But many of those older Americans will face high
blood pressure and heart disease along with other debilitating illnesses.
HCI is researching how to help people live longer lives with good health,
and lipoic acid may be an answer. "Our studies have shown that mice
supplemented with lipoic acid have a cognitive ability, behavior, and
genetic expression of almost 100 detoxification and antioxidant genes that
are comparable to that of young animals," Hagen said. "They aren't just
living longer, they are living better - and that's the goal we're after."
Studies are increasingly showing why lipoic acid is so important in keeping
our brains young. He writes in his special report Stop Aging, Naturally
"One free radical associated with all neurodegenerative diseases, such as
Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, can only be neutralized by alpha lipoic acid,
glutathione and flavonoids from plants. Vitamin E and C and the carotenoids
can do nothing to it." In fact, this substance functions to "restore other
antioxidants, such as vitamin E and C. It also reduces brain aging, removes
mercury from the brain, enhances brain energy levels and can lower blood
sugar, especially the R-lipoic form.
LPI researchers found that lipoic acid's rejuvenating effect appears to be
its capacity to reduce the decay of mitochondria in cells, by jump starting
the aging body's lagging ability to produce glutathione.
"We never really expected such a surprising range of benefits from one
compound," said Hagen. "This is really unprecedented, and we're pretty
excited about it."
Lipoic acid can be found in low levels in foods such as spinach and
broccoli, and can also be taken as supplement.
Additionally, lipoic acid is just one of 11 key anti-aging substances your
body desperately needs as you get older. To discover these important
vitamins and minerals that can extend your life.
