Clinical melatonin studies
In one study, subjects took the same dosage of melatonin at varying times
for two weeks: an immediate-release melatonin 30 minutes before bedtime, a
controlled-release melatonin 30 minutes before bedtime, and an
immediate-release melatonin four hours after bedtime. All three regimens
shortened the time it took subjects to reach uninterrupted sleep.
Melatonin vs. placebo
A study found that 2 mg of a controlled-release melatonin formulation taken
two hours before bed promoted healthy sleep, compared with a placebo, and
also shortened the length of time it took subjects to fall back asleep
after waking up at night. In another study, subjects took a 0.1 mg, 0.3 mg,
or 3 mg melatonin capsule or a placebo 30 minutes before bedtime for three
