Magnesium for Migraines in Children: Can It Reduce Frequency & Severity?
A small randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in children with frequent migrainous headaches found that oral magnesium oxide supplementation was associated with reduced headache frequency and severity compared to placebo, though findings are preliminary and larger trials are needed.

Magnesium plays an important role in neurological function and muscle relaxation. Migraine headaches in children can involve significant pain, sensitivity to light and sound, nausea, and disruption to daily activities and school performance.
• Magnesium is involved in neurological signaling and vascular function.
• A randomized trial in children with frequent migrainous headaches associated oral magnesium oxide with reductions in headache frequency and severity.
• Improvements in associated symptoms such as appetite and sensory sensitivity were also noted in the magnesium group.
• About 20% of children experienced diarrhea, a common side effect at the studied dose.
• These results are from a single small study; larger, confirmatory trials are needed, especially in pediatric populations.
• Magnesium supports general wellness as part of a balanced diet—any use in children requires medical supervision.
Research has explored magnesium’s potential role in supporting neurological comfort and migraine patterns.
In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 118 children and adolescents (aged 3–17) with frequent migrainous headaches received magnesium oxide (9 mg elemental magnesium per kg body weight daily, divided in 3 doses) or placebo for 16 weeks. Headache diaries showed a statistically significant reduction in headache frequency over time in the magnesium group, along with lower headache severity compared to placebo. Improvements in associated symptoms were also observed. Diarrhea occurred in approximately 20% of the magnesium group (NIH/PubMed — Wang et al., 2003).
Evidence Strength: Moderate / Emerging in children — positive signals from one small pediatric RCT; larger studies are required to confirm benefits and optimal dosing.
Magnesium has long been a foundational nutrient in our formulations because of its roles in neurological and muscular function. This pediatric trial offers an interesting early observation on its potential supportive role in children experiencing frequent migraines. We emphasize that magnesium is not a cure or standalone treatment. Any supplementation in children must be discussed with a qualified healthcare professional, using appropriate dosing and high-quality, well-tolerated forms alongside healthy lifestyle habits.
• Magnesium is involved in neurological function and has been studied for migraine patterns.
• One small randomized trial associated oral magnesium oxide with reduced headache frequency and severity in children.
• Findings are preliminary; larger, well-designed studies are needed before drawing firm conclusions.
• Diet rich in magnesium (leafy greens, nuts, seeds) is a safe starting point.
• Always consult a pediatrician before giving magnesium supplements to children, especially for migraine concerns.
Foods to Support / Limit
Foods to Support: Spinach, kale, almonds, pumpkin seeds, avocados, bananas, and black beans — these provide natural magnesium and other supportive nutrients.
Foods/Lifestyle to Limit or Manage: Excessive caffeine, sugary processed foods, skipped meals, and dehydration, as they may trigger or worsen migraine patterns in sensitive children. Consistent sleep schedules and stress management are also important.

Our Research Standards
We draw from peer-reviewed clinical studies indexed in the National Institutes of Health (NIH) via PubMed and prioritize well-designed trials, systematic reviews, and long-term observational data. We present findings transparently while clearly noting limitations, especially in pediatric populations. Magnesium supports wellness but is not a treatment or cure for migraines or any condition.
